Buffalo, NY is the Best Place for Working Mothers!

businesswoman with childForbesWoman ranks Buffalo, NY as No. 1 in their 2011 report “Best Cities for Working Mothers” (up from 10th position last year).  Buffalo gained the top place through a combination of:

- Being home to the State University of New York at Buffalo, one of Working Mother’s best companies giving employees 28 weeks of time-off when they give birth, father or adopt a child.

- Jobless levels in the upstate region are lower than they are in 70% of the nation’s biggest metro areas, and wages, which had been stagnant in 2008 and 2009 saw new momentum last year.

- Lower than average crime rates, a low cost of living and the highest per-pupil expenditure of any city.

- Increasing number of female entrepreneurs in the area.

Home Ownership Tops Ranking of Favored Long Term Investments

The results of the latest American Dream Survey by Trulia finds that 80 percent of homeowners plan to buy another home and that most survey participants view home ownership as the best long-term investment, closely followed by putting money into a 401(k) or retirement account.  Investing in gold, often popular during an economic downturn, was a surprising fourth choice at only 26 percent.

Doubled-up Households Increasing

The US Census Bureau defines doubled-up households as households that include at least one “additional” adult: a person 18 or older who is not enrolled in school and is not the householder, spouse or cohabiting partner of the householder.

The Bureau’s recently released survey, “Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2010“, found that the number of doubled-up adults increased by 12.2 percent from 2007 to 2011.  This compares to a growth in the adult population of 3.8 percent.

In spring 2007, prior to the recession, doubled-up households totaled 19.7 million. By spring 2011, the number of doubled-up households had increased by 2.0 million to 21.8 million and the percent rose by 1.3 percentage points from 17.0 percent to 18.3 percent.

In spring 2011, 5.9 million young adults age 25-34 (14.2 percent) resided in their parents’ household, compared with 4.7 million (11.8 percent) before the recession, an increase of 2.4 percentage points.  While the report doesn’t identify why doubled-up households are increasing it seems reasonable to assume that economic conditions and care-giving, in the case of the sick or elderly, are partly responsible.
